Let me start with something important:
You do not have to write your own vows.
Seriously. There's a lot of pressure these days to have the most poetic, tear-jerking, Instagram-worthy vows, but for some people, that kind of pressure can turn a beautiful moment into a nerve-wracking one. If writing isn’t your thing, don’t worry. Your officiant (hi, that’s me 👋) should have some lovely "repeat-after-me vows" ready that still feel heartfelt and meaningful.
#dontstress Your love is not defined by your writing skills.
✍️ But If You Do Want to Write Your Own Vows…
First of all...yay! I love when couples choose to speak from the heart. Personal vows can be deeply moving, funny, honest, and unforgettable. But getting started is often the hardest part. Here’s my go-to formula for keeping it simple and authentic:
🎯 Start with just six sentences:
- Two sentences about how you felt when you first met
- Two sentences about how you feel now, standing here about to get married
- Two sentences about your hopes for your future together
From there, add in a few “I vow to…” statements that support the future you envision. These promises don’t have to be grand, they just have to be true.
Vow Writing Prompts to Get You Started:
“I still remember the first time I saw you…”
“I knew I was in trouble when…”
“Standing here today, I feel…”
“I can’t wait to…”
“I vow to always…”
“Even when things get hard, I promise to…”
“I choose you because…”
Let your vows reflect who you are as a couple. Don’t worry about impressing anyone else, this moment is just for the two of you.

Final Thoughts from Your Officiant
Whether you write your own vows, speak from the heart, or repeat after me, I promise your ceremony will be full of love, meaning, and intention. Personal vows are beautiful, but they’re never a requirement. You already said “yes.” You don’t have to say it in perfect prose.
