Smokerise Retreat Wedding | Gatlinburg, TN

I recently had the opportunity to officiate Alyssa and Emilio's wedding at Smokerise Retreat in Gatlinburg, and from an officiant's perspective, this property has a lot going for it for couples planning a small Smoky Mountain wedding.

One of the biggest advantages of a wedding at Smokerise Retreat is simplicity. Everything takes place right there at the property, surrounded by the people who you choose to be part of your day. There is no rushing between a hotel, ceremony venue, and reception location. For an intimate wedding, having everyone together in one place can make the entire day feel much more relaxed.

And relaxed couples make for better ceremonies.

Smokerise Retreat gives you the feeling of being tucked away in the mountains without being completely removed from Gatlinburg and the surrounding area.

That privacy works particularly well for an elopement or micro wedding. When I'm officiating a smaller ceremony, I always appreciate a location where the couple can focus on each other instead of what's happening around them.

You aren't dealing with tourists walking through your ceremony or waiting for a public overlook to clear. It's your space.

I wouldn't choose Smokerise Retreat because you're looking for a traditional wedding venue. I'd choose it because you aren't.

This is the kind of location that works for couples who want to spend a few days in the Smoky Mountains with the people closest to them and have their wedding naturally become part of that experience.

You can get ready at the cabin, have your ceremony, take your photographs, celebrate, and spend the evening together without turning the wedding day into a complicated schedule.

This is a mountain property, so prepare your guests for mountain roads and encourage carpooling.

I'd also keep the ceremony itself fairly simple. The setting already does a lot of the work. You don't necessarily need a tremendous amount of décor or an elaborate ceremony setup.

And because you're in the Smokies, weather should always be part of the conversation. Have a backup plan and be willing to adjust the ceremony time or location on the property if Mother Nature decides she has other ideas.

That's good advice for just about any outdoor Smoky Mountain wedding.

For the right couple, I think Smokerise Retreat offers something many traditional wedding venues can't: the chance to slow the day down.

I recently officiated Alyssa and Emilio's wedding at Smokerise Retreat. They didn't need a ballroom or a complicated timeline. They had a beautiful place in the mountains, the people they wanted beside them, and a ceremony centered on why everyone was there in the first place.

They were getting married.

And from this officiant's point of view, that's exactly where the focus should be.

Things to Consider

🙁 Mountain roads may be intimidating for some guests

🙁 Limited parking makes carpooling or shuttles a good idea

🙁 Best suited for smaller weddings - 20 guest max

🙁 Outdoor ceremonies mean you need a weather backup plan

🙁 Not the right choice if you want a traditional wedding venue or ballroom experience

* Weather: Have a flexible plan in mind. Conditions in the mountains can change quickly, and the outdoor space provides no weather protection.

* Tell your guests about the mountain roads. I highly recommend booking a shuttle for your guests who will not stay onsite. My recommendations are Elite shuttle Service and Smoky Rides. If you don't use shuttles, be sure to give everyone good directions ahead of time and encourage carpooling, especially guests who aren't accustomed to driving in the mountains.

* Parking: Parking at the Main cabin is limited. You can park cars at the bottom of the hill if you are renting the multiple cabins. Be sure to save the spots in front of the main cabin for your vendors.
