Marriage License Information

You need to obtain a marriage license prior to your wedding date. Each state has it's own rules on where and when you need to apply. The fees, blood test requirements, witness attendance, and length of time the certificate is valid, vary from state to state. Some states have waiting periods and some do not.

You need to apply for the license in the state where your ceremony is taking place, even if you don't live in that state. For example, if you live in Ohio, but you are getting married in Tennessee, you need to apply for your license in Tennessee. Tennessee allows you to apply at any county clerk's office. Fees vary and some offices will allow you to apply online, so shop the offices.
