Smoky Mountain Wedding Guide
Eloping at Greenbrier in the GSMNP

Greenbrier is a top choice for couples eloping in the Great Smoky Mountains. Learn what to expect, when to elope, and how to plan your Greenbrier elopement.

1. Why Choose Greenbrier for Your Elopement

Greenbrier is one of my favorite hidden gems in the park. It’s tucked just outside of Gatlinburg. Close, but not crowded. Once you’re there, it feels like your own secret corner of the Smokies. Secluded river spots, mossy trails, and forest magic. This place has such a quiet beauty.

There is a riverside clearing perfect for ceremonies and forest trails that feel like you’re walking through a fairytale. It’s only a short drive from Gatlinburg, but you won’t find the big tour buses or heavy foot traffic here. It’s calm, peaceful, and unhurried, just like your day should be. Stunning in every season: Spring wildflowers, summer greens, fiery fall leaves, or even snow-dusted trees in winter, Greenbrier is a year-round stunner.

Why So Many Couples Are Choosing to Elope in the Smoky Mountains

Fact: big weddings aren’t for everyone.

Some couples want to escape the stress of a traditional wedding and immerse themselves in a beautiful, natural setting. That’s why eloping in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has always been so popular.

Nature doesn’t need decorations. The quiet moments don’t need an audience. And your commitment? It doesn’t need an audience either. If you're looking for a place that feels wild, sacred, and completely about you, Greenbrier may be the perfect spot for your elopement.

2. Elopement Locations Within Greenbrier

There are two approved ceremony locations. Both these locations are time restricted from May 25-September 7 - no events between 10am-6pm. Plan for a 9am or a 7pm ceremony during the summer season.

Greenbrier 1: Tucked along the bank of the Little Pigeon River, this small beach is the most popular spot in Greenbrier. Surrounded by river-worn boulders and framed by gentle raids and water features, Greenbrier 1 offers unbeatable photo opportunities. Access is relatively easy, just across from Parking Area #2. A short, slightly steep step leads to a well-worn path that takes you straight to the water’s edge.

Greenbrier 2: Deeper into the Greenbrier section is the entrance to Old Settlers Trail. More wooded than Greenbrier 1, this location features a wooden bridge crossing and some river access. You will need to be a bit more adventurous in climbing down to the water at Greenbrier 2.

A simple view of Greenbrier 2 - and yes, he brought fishing poles.

3. When to Elope at Greenbrier

Spring and fall are the sweet spots: Spring brings flowers and fresh green everything, while fall lights the forest on fire with golden leaves.

Go early or go late: Mornings have soft light and quiet energy, while sunset brings a golden glow through the trees.

Weekdays are your friend: Planning your elopement for a Tuesday morning? Genius. Less traffic, more privacy, better photos.

Remember: Both these locations are time restricted from May 25-September 7 - no events between 10am-6pm. Plan for a 9am or a 7pm ceremony during the summer season.

4. Legal Stuff: Permits and Paperwork

Yes, even a tiny wedding in the park needs a Special Use Permit, but don’t worry, it’s pretty straightforward. See my blog post How to Apply for a Special Use Permit (SUP) for Your Smoky Mountain Elopement. Apply at least 4 weeks before your date.

5. Keep it simple

GSMNP has rules about what you can and can’t bring, no arches, chairs, or sound systems. The forest doesn’t need help being beautiful. As an officiant who’s worked all over the Smokies, I’m happy to walk you through the process and help keep things stress-free and legal.

6. Tips from the Trail: What You Should Know Before You Go

Whether you’re planning a short photo shoot or a full trail hike after your elopement, a little prep goes a long way.

Wear what you love, but make sure it works for the trail. Think lightweight dresses that move with the breeze, comfortable shoes (yes, even under your gown!), and layers in cooler weather.

Pack a small bag: Bring your marriage license, your Special Use Permit, your rings, a backup copy of your vows (trust me, emotions run high!) water, a snack, tissues, bug spray, a hair tie and a small first aid kit, just in case for those little scrapes.

Talk to your photographer and/or officiant about logistics: Most local elopement photographers who work in GSMNP will have suggestions for light, timing, and gear. Many carry weather protection and backup batteries, just in case.
